🌟 About the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) 🌟

Hey teens! Want to earn money and gain real work skills this summer? Then SYEP is here for YOU!

🚀 Funded by the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA), this program is for Sullivan County residents ages 14-20.

🗓️ Dates: July 6th - August 14th, 2026 

That’s 6 weeks of awesome work experience!

 Clerical, landscaping, digital marketing, and more! We’ll match you with jobs that fit your interests and goals.

The Process

📅 Key Dates & Deadlines

  • Application Deadline: May 8, 2026 (Late applications go to a waitlist).

  • Program Dates: July 6 – August 14, 2026.

  • Schedule: Monday through Thursday, 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM (plus a mandatory event on Friday, August 14).

📋 Eligibility & Requirements

  • Age: 14–20 years old.

  • Background Checks: Required for anyone 18 or older.

  • No Summer School: If you have to attend summer school, you cannot participate in this program.

  • Transportation: You are responsible for getting yourself to and from work.

📎 Required Documentation (The "Must-Haves")

Your application will not be accepted without the following:

  1. Photo ID: State ID, Student ID, or Passport.

  2. Working Papers: Required if you are under 18.

  3. Social Security Card: Original copy.

  4. Birth Certificate: Original copy.

  5. Proof of Income (household): Last 6 months (e.g., tax returns, SNAP/SSI award letters).

  6. Proof of Residency: Sullivan County (e.g., utility bill, lease, or school record).

👔 The Interview Process

If your application is accepted, you’ll be scheduled for an interview. Keep these rules in mind:

  • Dress Code: Business casual. No hoodies, ripped jeans, or slides.

  • Parental Presence: If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must attend the interview with you.

  • Topics: Be ready to talk about your interests, past volunteer work, and how you plan to get to the job site.

🌟Frequently Asked Questions🌟

Q: What will my work schedule be? 

  • You’re expected to be there all the weeks and days of the program—no make-up or vacation days! 

  • Summer school conflicts mean you can’t join if you have school obligations. 

  • Workdays are Monday through Thursday, from July 6th to August 14th, 2025, from 9 AM to 3 PM. 

  • Lunch (30 mins) and two 15-minute breaks are paid! 

  • The last day is special—there’s a picnic and awards event, and you’ll get paid to attend!

 

Q: How do I get paid? 

  • Paychecks come every other Friday, starting July 31st, ending August 28th. 

  • Pick up your check at the Center for Workforce Development by noon or it will be mailed to your address after that. 

  • Only YOU can pick up your paycheck—no parents or friends! 

  • Notify the SYEP Coordinator if your address changes. 

  • You get paid for every hour worked, including lunch and breaks! 

  • On August 14th, you’ll get your last paycheck at the picnic/awards event.

 

Q: How do I cash my check? 

No bank account? No problem! Jeff Bank in Monticello will cash your check with proof of identity (your work papers).

 

Q: What if I need to call out? 

  • Being on time and present is super important! 

  • If you’re running late or can’t make it, call the SYEP Coordinator BEFORE 9 AM at 845-794-3340. 

  • No pay for absences—whether they’re excused or not. 

  • Need time off? Talk to your site supervisor and Youth Workforce Coordinator as soon as possible.

 

Q: How do I keep track of my hours? 

  • Fill out a time sheet weekly with your site supervisor, sign it, and turn it in every Thursday. 

  • Extra time sheets are available from the Youth Workforce Coordinator. 

  • It’s your job to keep track—if you forget, you might not get paid on time!

 

Q: What should I wear? 

  • Indoor sites: Dress nicely and follow site dress codes. 

  • Outdoor sites: No open toe shoes, tank tops, or belly shirts. Wear long sleeves, a hat, and protective gear if needed. 

  • No flip flops, shorts, ripped jeans, pajamas, or similar! 

  • Need help with clothing? Contact the Youth Workforce Coordinator at 845-794-3340.

 

Q: Anything else I should know? 

  • Bring your lunch, snacks, and drinks every day! 

  • Outdoor site participants: bring a water bottle! 

  • Stay on-site for lunch and breaks. 

  • Phones are only allowed during lunch and breaks—no calls or social media during work! 

  • Dress for all weather—rain or shine! 

  • Don’t eat or touch wildlife if you’re outside. 

  • No smoking, vaping, or substances at any site. 

  • Keep track of your belongings. 

  • Clean up after yourself. 

  • Bathrooms are available at all sites.

 

Q: What’s the picnic and awards event? 

  • It’s our celebration at the end of the program! 

  • Attendance is mandatory—and you get paid to be there!  

  • We’ll have food, games, awards, and a fun recap of the season. 

  • This event is just for participants!
