Monticello, NY – Sullivan County Legislature Chairman Luis Alvarez participated in a conference call with Governor Andrew Cuomo yesterday, where the Governor expressed the state’s deep commitment to responding quickly and effectively to ongoing concerns about flooding and ice jams statewide.
“This pattern of freezing and warming temperatures is causing flooding and ice jams on streams and rivers statewide that threaten our communities,” Governor Cuomo said. “I have directed National Guard and state resources to be ready in advance, and I urge all New Yorkers to stay tuned into local weather reports and prepare for potential flooding into the weekend.”
While Sullivan County has fortunately been thus far spared serious damage due to ice jams, hamlets like Livingston Manor, Jeffersonville, Roscoe and Westbrookville have dealt with flooding along major transportation arteries in recent weeks. Thus Chairman Alvarez was grateful to be included in yesterday’s conference call, where the Governor pledged the full support of the state in responding to floods caused by ice jams, including deploying 50 assessment teams statewide.
“I remember the Governor’s assistance with downtown flooding in Livingston Manor just a few weeks ago, and how he and Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther ensured the vital participation of various state agencies – and provided $50,000 to move forward a critical Army Corps of Engineers project that promises to help mitigate repeated flooding in that hamlet,” Chairman Alvarez remarked. “That kind of prompt assistance makes all the difference in a rural County like ours, and I thank Governor Cuomo and Assemblywoman Gunther for their responsiveness and ‘can-do’ approach.”
