Monticello, NY – How can thoughtful planning and design shape vibrant and attractive communities?
The Sullivan County Division of Planning and Community Development invites local planning, zoning, and municipal officials as well as interested community members to an upcoming workshop to explore this idea. Representatives from the Department of State will lead two training sessions on Monday, February 26 from 5-8:30 p.m. in the Legislative Hearing Room of the Government Center in Monticello. Light fare will be provided in between sessions for attendees.
“When it comes to creating the kind of community in which we want to live, the power really is in our hands,” notes District 9 Legislator Alan Sorensen, chair of the Legislature’s Planning, Environmental Management and Real Property Committee. “Concentrated in the hands of a few representatives of the community, however, it is incumbent upon those officials to understand how to effectively and responsively wield that power.”
Attendees will receive a certificate of completion for continuing education credits. Planning and zoning board members will receive NYS-required training credits, and code enforcement officers may receive credit for Professional Development Electives. Please RSVP by Friday, February 23 so that your certificate will be available for pick-up at the event.
Pick one or both of these seminars to attend:
• Community Design Tools, 5-6:30 p.m. – Municipal officials have a variety of tools available to them to help shape the appearance of their community. At this session, tools ranging from simple design guidelines to landscape ordinances and architectural review boards will be discussed. They’ll be introduced to practical approaches that can be applied to both public and private development, and presenters will explain some basic design concepts.
• Sign Regulation, 7-8:30 p.m. – Sign control isn’t just a zoning issue. When regulating signage, municipalities must be careful not to violate free speech. This course reveals how signage can be regulated for aesthetics and explores the boundaries of what municipalities may and may not regulate, through references to case law. The course also offers tips on drafting sign regulations, which includes billboards and other off-premises signs, plus the elimination of nonconforming signs.
