Monticello, NY – Another round of Small Business Training will be held this month to assist owners of small businesses in Sullivan County and those looking to start one here. The classes, just two evening hours each, will begin Tuesday, September 11 and run every Tuesday and Thursday thereafter, through Thursday, October 4.
“I can’t stress enough how important this training is for anyone in business – just starting out or considering expansion,” affirmed Division of Planning & Community Development Assistant Commissioner Jill M. Weyer. “The classes we offer – taught by experienced professionals – include the writing of a business plan, which is absolutely essential to obtain financing and build a successful enterprise.”
Now in its sixth round, the program is coordinated by the Planning Division, the Partnership for Economic Development, the Industrial Development Agency, the Center for Workforce Development, and the Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce, who will also help participants identify and qualify for low-interest loans, subsidies and other forms of support.
The eight sessions of the Small Business Training Program will cover such topics as small business basics; market research and analysis; preparing a business plan; financing; taxes, permitting and licensing; customer service; and finding and managing employees. Each session is taught by professionals with experience in that aspect of business, and participants receive individual coaching on their business plans throughout the course.
This step-by-step, hands-on curriculum originated in 2012 and has helped such businesses as Dhani’s Curry Melt in Liberty, Java Love Coffee Roasters in White Lake, Main Street Farm in Livingston Manor, Nelly’s Latin Restaurant in Monticello, Sudsy Paws Pet Services in Wurtsboro, the Stickett Inn in Barryville, and Big Kev’s BBQ in Bethel (recognized as one of the top barbecue destinations in the Northeast).
The training program will be limited to 15 people in order to create an environment where participants can learn from and support each other. The class schedule will be built around the needs and availability of those participating. Applications must be submitted by Friday, September 7 in order to be considered. The $100 fee offsets a fraction of the costs associated with the training.
