Monticello, NY – Nationwide, waste-stream organics – things like degraded paper, yard debris and unused/wasted food – account for about 40% of the material we send to landfills for disposal. Uneaten food accounts for about a quarter of organics landfilled. Making more productive use of these materials is a priority, since trash exported and buried in landfills generates potent greenhouse gases like methane and costs money to manage properly.
An easy and inexpensive way to handle organics at home is by composting. Earth Machine Compost Bins are available from Cornell Cooperative Extension of Sullivan County at a reduced price of $75.
Please order bins & barrels prior to May 7 at the Extension Education Center in Liberty or online at sullivancce.org/events.
