Monticello, NY – Sullivan County Legislature Chairman Luis Alvarez released the following statement today about the just-adopted NYS Budget:
“Through an increase in funding, Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York State are taking the necessary actions to help combat deadly opioid addiction. Enhanced treatment and recovery programs, as well as residential service opportunities and public awareness events will provide those individuals struggling with opioid addiction the proper resources and guidance on the road to recovery. I commend Governor Cuomo for stepping up and providing the necessary leadership to address this epidemic that has plagued our communities.”
The new State Budget creates an opioid stewardship program with a $100 million fund to be used for the ongoing and growing costs of prevention, treatment, and recovery services for individuals with a substance abuse disorder. Language in the budget ensures the costs are borne by industry, not by consumers.
Additionally, more than $200 million is being used to address the heroin and opioid crisis. The Budget includes an increase of over $30 million (5 percent) in operating and capital support for the Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services to continue to enhance prevention, treatment and recovery programs, residential service opportunities, and public awareness & education activities.
Sullivan County continues to pour resources into the effort locally, including Narcan training, Public Health Services’ addiction referral line, and the Opioid Epidemic Task Force.
