Absentee Voters Have a Choice to Make

Absentee Ballot Application

Monticello, NY – The Sullivan County Board of Elections wants voters to know about a recent change in New York State election law that may influence their decision about casting a ballot as an Absentee Voter. This law, which became effective January 1, 2022, will change the ability to vote in person on a voting machine.

In the past, Absentee Voters could change their minds and instead vote in person on a voting machine either during Early Voting or on Election Day.

With the new law, any Absentee Voter – including Permanent Absentees who have been issued an Absentee ballot – will no longer be able to vote in person on a machine. If an Absentee voter wishes to vote in person, it will be by Affidavit ballot only.

The Affidavit ballot will be kept separate until the election is completed. Election officials will then verify whether the voter’s Absentee ballot has been received. If the Absentee ballot has been received, the Affidavit ballot will not be counted. If the voter’s Absentee ballot has not been received, the Affidavit ballot will be counted.

Any local voter who would like to change their status as an Absentee Voter (so that they may vote in person on a voting machine) should please notify the Sullivan County Board of Elections in writing as soon as possible: 100 North Street, Monticello, NY 12701, or scboe@sullivanny.us.

If you have any questions, please call the Board of Elections at 845-807-0400.
