County Provides Free Cardio Testing to Local Emergency Responders

Advanced Cardiovascular Diagnostics brought this van to the Sullivan County Emergency Services Training Facility in White Lake to test more than 50 local first-responders for risk of heart attack and stroke.

White Lake, NY – One of the leading killers in the fire service is heart attacks/strokes, often without any previous symptoms or signs. With that in mind, the Sullivan County Division of Public Safety recently brought in a cardiovascular exam company to offer testing to all emergency service personnel and their families.

Planning Hosts Roundtable to Discuss Light Pollution

Planning and zoning board officials, as well as professional planners and municipal officials from across Sullivan County, gathered on October 22 to discuss implementing dark skies concepts into municipal practice.

Local Teens Encouraged to Apply to Join Governor's NYS Youth Council

 

Monticello, NY – There’s a great opportunity for a local young person to serve on the New York State Governor’s Youth Council!

Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced the formation of a New York State Youth Council, to increase participatory democracy. One youth from each county will be chosen to advise the governor and State and local policymakers on key issues facing young people and on outreach and communication strategies. The State is now accepting applications from youth to serve on this council.

Warming Centers Will Be Open All Winter in Liberty, Monticello

Monticello, NY – As part of New York State’s “Code Blue” mandate, Sullivan County will begin operating overnight warming shelters seven days a week with partner agencies in Liberty and Monticello.

“Our Department of Family Services is collaborating with the Federation for the Homeless, the Village of Monticello, and two churches in Liberty to ensure no one suffers one night out in the cold this winter,” said District 2 Legislator Nadia Rajsz, chair of the Legislature’s Health & Family Services Committee, which yesterday passed the authorizing legislation.

“Don’t plan to come back to Sullivan County’s Department of Family Services (DFS) for your application – we have become a processing center,” explained Joe Todora, Commissioner of the Division of Health & Family Services. “Instead, plan to see one of our community partners.”
