Fun and Facts to Mix at Celebration of International Human Rights

Monticello, NY – The Sullivan County Human Rights Commission invites young people ages 3-13 and their families to an interactive celebration of the 70th anniversary of the International Declaration of Human Rights.

Fun and educational, the celebration will run from 1-3:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 9 (the day before International Human Rights Day) at the Ted Stroebele Center, 10 Jefferson Street, Monticello.

Sullivan County Offices to Close for National Day of Mourning

Monticello, NY – In recognition of the federally declared National Day of Mourning upon the passing of former President George H.W. Bush, all non-essential Sullivan County Government offices will be closed on Wednesday, December 5.

“The entire nation will pause that day to reflect upon the legacy of one of our great leaders,” affirmed Sullivan County Legislature Chairman Luis Alvarez. “We will join a fitting tribute to a man who made a lasting mark on this country.”

Youth Bureau Announces 2019 Grant Opportunities

Monticello, NY – The Sullivan County Youth Bureau is now accepting grant applications from organizations that serve children and youth within Sullivan County.

The Youth Bureau receives monies annually from the County and the New York State Office of Children and Family Services to fund youth development programs within Sullivan County. Eligible applicants include private nonprofit organizations, schools and municipalities.

County Manager Gains Top Credential

Monticello, NY – Sullivan County Manager Josh Potosek has earned the International City/County Management Association’s (ICMA’s) prestigious Credentialed Manager designation.

ICMA is the premier organization of professional local government leaders building sustainable communities to improve lives worldwide. The organization provides technical and management assistance, training, and information resources in the areas of performance measurement, ethics education and training, community and economic development, environmental management, technology, and other topics.

Hurleyville, NY – National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, December 7th, commemorates the World War II attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Many American servicemen and women lost their lives or were wounded on that date in 1941. 

On Friday, December 7, 2018, at 12:30 p.m., Sullivan County Historian John Conway will delve into that history at the Sullivan County Museum in Hurleyville.

Bring the Family to Hear This Family Fiddle!

Hurleyville, NY –The Kurpil Family Fiddlers are bringing their history and old-time fiddlin’ to the Sullivan County Museum in Hurleyville on Sunday, December 2 at 2 p.m. 

The Kurpils are natives of Sullivan County and operate a farm in Jeffersonville. Sam Kurpil is in his 90s and still plays guitar with the band. He learned to play from his father; then he taught his daughters, Cindy Gieger and Christina Jones, who both play fiddle and harmonize together. 

America Recycles Day Is Today!

Monticello, NY – The Sullivan County Department of Solid Waste and Recycling is pleased to announce that today, November 15, is America Recycles Day. 

America Recycles Day, a Keep America Beautiful national initiative, is the only nationally-recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States.  Each year, people across the country participate by promoting environmental citizenship and taking action to increase and improve recycling in America. 

Council of Local Governments to Meet Wednesday in Public

Monticello, NY - A Special Meeting of the Sullivan County Council of Local Governments has been called by Legislature Chairman Luis Alvarez for Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at Noon in the Legislative Hearing Room of the County Government Center in Monticello. The purpose of the meeting, which is open to the public, is to discuss sharing of services and any other business that may come before the Council.
