Legislature Begins Process to Sell Care Center at Sunset Lake

Monticello, NY – As part of the ongoing response to the serious fiscal crisis Sullivan County is facing, legislators on Thursday unanimously voted to set a public hearing to transfer the Care Center at Sunset Lake (the Sullivan County Adult Care Center) in Liberty to a Local Development Corporation (LDC), as a first step toward selling the nursing home and short-term rehabilitation facility.

Local Hazard Mitigation Planning Updates Beginning

Albany, NY- The County of Sullivan, in partnership with New York State’s Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (NYSDHSES) and the University at Albany’s Visualization and Informatics Laboratory (AVAIL), is currently updating their Multi-Jurisdictional Local Hazard Mitigation Plan. This update is part of a state pilot program, funded by FEMA and administered by NYSDHSES. It is tasked with testing web-based software and integrated planning approaches designed for local hazard mitigation planning across New York State.

Lake Superior to Close for Holiday Weekend

Bethel, NY – Lake Superior State Park in Bethel, operated by Sullivan County, will temporarily close for the July 4 weekend, starting the evening of Thursday, July 2 and running through the morning of Monday, July 6.

“Since the beach has not opened this season, we decided to take this action in order to minimize issues with crowds and revelers at the park for the Independence Day holiday,” Parks Director Brian Scardefield explains. “We’re sorry for any inconvenience, but during this unprecedented time, we’re choosing a prudent and cautious path.”

Kitten Tests Positive for Rabies in Town of Delaware

Liberty, NY – Sullivan County Public Health Services is advising the public to stay away from stray cats as well as wild animals and to be vigilant of your surroundings, especially if you live or work near a wooded area or neighborhood with feral cats.

A kitten tested positive for rabies and had recently scratched two people in the Town of Delaware. The individuals are being treated for rabies exposure.   

Transportation and Town Leaders to Speak at Upcoming Town Halls

Monticello, NY – Legislature Chairman Robert Doherty announces that Rolling V Bus Company President Phil Vallone will join Legislature Vice Chair Mike Brooks, County Manager Josh Potosek and Public Health Director Nancy McGraw at the next Live Town Hall this Monday, June 29 at 1 p.m.

The following Thursday, July 2, Bethel Town Supervisor Dan Sturm and Tusten Town Supervisor Ben Johnson will be the featured guest presenters.

How to Access Social Services in Phase 3

Liberty, NY – The Sullivan County Department of Family Services (DFS) will continue to operate on a limited access protocol per State guidelines. 

Hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday by appointment only. Applications and required paperwork can be found at two locations: DFS, 16 Community Lane, Liberty, or Sullivan County Career Center, 50 North Street, Monticello. There are also drop boxes located at these locations for submitting those applications and other necessary documentation.

DA Returns to Town Hall; Local Clergy to Speak Next

Monticello, NY – Legislature Chairman Robert Doherty announces that District Attorney Meagan Galligan will join Legislature Vice Chair Mike Brooks, County Manager Josh Potosek and Public Health Director Nancy McGraw at the next Live Town Hall this Monday, June 22 at 1 p.m.

The following Thursday, June 25, four area religious leaders – Rabbi Lawrence Zierler, Father Edward Bader, Imam Samuel Encarnacion and Pastor David Coon – will talk about coronavirus’ impact on their missions, their congregations, their services and their everyday activities.
