POW/MIA Day to Be Observed in Monticello

The Fallen Comrade Table, present at every Sullivan County POW/MIA Recognition Day, features a specific set of items designed to remember American servicepeople who were/are Prisoners of War or Missing in Action.

Monticello, NY – The Sullivan County Veterans Service Agency will have a special ceremony in honor of POW/MIA Recognition Day at 1 p.m. on Friday, September 16, 2022 inside the lobby of the Sullivan County Government Center, 100 North Street, Monticello.

Thanks to County Legislators, NYS Department of Health Is Staying Local

The Gladys Olmsted Building in Liberty houses Sullivan County Public Health and will soon feature space for the New York State Department of Health.

Liberty, NY – Legislators on August 18 unanimously agreed to let the NYS Department of Health (NYSDOH) lease a portion of the County-owned Public Health building in Liberty. An effort to reach an agreement was launched after the announcement that the Monticello office of NYSDOH would be relocated to Middletown.

New York's New Gun Laws Take Effect Tomorrow, September 1

Monticello, NY – Following legislation enacted by the State, the New York State Police, in conjunction with the Division of Criminal Justice Services, have issued details about the recent changes to New York State firearms laws. 

“For anyone that chooses to apply for a pistol permit on September 1 or after, there’s a new set of rules,” said Sullivan County Clerk Russell Reeves. “Changes to training, application forms and social media account disclosure (just to name a few) are some areas impacted.”

Monticello Bridge to Close for Five Weeks

Monticello, NY - The Sullivan County Division of Public Works is closing a portion of Waverly Avenue in the Village of Monticello to replace County Bridge 449, located approximately 0.2 mi. south of the intersection of East Broadway and Waverly Avenue.

This section of Waverly Avenue is scheduled to be closed to all traffic starting at 8 a.m. September 6, 2022, remaining closed for approximately 5 weeks.

Wanted: Older New Yorkers Who Make a Difference

Monticello, NY – The NYS Office for the Aging will celebrate Older New Yorkers’ Day on Friday, November 4, 2022, and Sullivan County has an opportunity to include up to two local honorees!

All honorees will receive a package that includes:

•           A commemorative pin

•           A hard copy of the book of biographies

Summer's Not Over at Our Parks

Monticello, NY – Two more Saturdays of En Plein Air Poetry and Art Workshops are coming to Sullivan County’s parks before the season ends.

Sullivan County’s new Poet Laureate Sharon Kennedy-Nolle and former Poet Laureate Eric Baylin will host these free workshops, held in cooperation with Sullivan County’s Office of Parks, Recreation and Beautification and the Sullivan Public Library Alliance.

Using nature as inspiration for painting, drawing, and verse-making, the workshops bring art and poetry into creative conversation. Each two-hour outing begins at 11 a.m.:

Legislative Majority Chooses Map #3 for Redistricting

Monticello, NY – A majority of legislators today picked a map – called “Option 3” – as their preferred district layout for the next decade.

Legislators Robert A. Doherty, Michael Brooks, Nicholas Salomone, George Conklin and Alan Sorensen voted in favor, after deciding against options 1 and 2. Legislators Nadia Rajsz, Luis Alvarez, Joseph Perrello and Ira Steingart voted not to accept any of the options, expressing a desire to extend the period of review.
