Mental Health Hotline Launched

Liberty, NY – Come Saturday, July 16, there’s a new number that could be as important as 911 to remember: 988.

“Every county in New York State, including Sullivan, will now offer this literal lifeline to crucial mental health crisis supports, including for those who are experiencing thoughts of suicide,” explained John Liddle, Sullivan County’s Commissioner of the Division of Health & Human Services. “Dialing those simple three digits will connect callers to a trained crisis counselor who can immediately address their needs, 24/7/365.”

New Health Survey Shows Sullivan Struggling But Doing Better

Liberty, NY – US News and World Report has released a set of nationwide county health rankings, similar to those released earlier this year by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF).

Division of Health & Human Services Commissioner John Liddle noted several key takeaways from the data posted at www.usnews.com/news/healthiest-communities/new-york/sullivan-county:

Independent Auditors Affirm County's Finances Are Stable

Monticello, NY – Sullivan County’s independent auditors informed legislators Thursday that County government’s financial picture has improved and is now “stable,” based on the results of their audit of the 2021 fiscal year.

“You did experience a pretty significant increase [in revenue] based on the sales tax primarily,” noted Matthew Montalbo of Drescher & Malecki, a Buffalo-based accounting firm. “All in all, [this report is] an improvement from the prior year.”

Lily Pond Road Bridge Closing for Four Months

Parksville, NY – The Sullivan County Division of Public Works is closing a portion of Liberty Town Highway 47 (Lily Pond Road) near Parksville to replace County Bridge 228. The bridge is located approximately 500 feet north of the intersection of Cooley Road (County Road 85) and Lily Pond Rd. This section of Town Highway 47 will be closed to all traffic starting 8 a.m. July 18, 2022, and will remain closed for approximately four (4) months.

Sullivan County Budget Again Wins National Award

Monticello, NY – For the seventh time in a row, the Sullivan County Manager’s Office and Budget Office have earned the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA).

A panel of judges reviewed more than 1,700 budgets submitted to the GFOA, including Sullivan County’s version for the 2022 fiscal year. They judged the budgets on their excellence as policy documents, financial plans, operations guides and communications devices, deeming Sullivan’s to be “outstanding” in all four categories.

Take a Trip Back to a Colder Place This July 21

These photos, printed from recently rediscovered negatives, are part of an ongoing display at the Sullivan County Cultural Center in Hurleyville. Taken by Hortonville native and North Pole explorer Frederick Cook, they’ll be the subject of an informative discussion July 21.
