Monticello Warming Center Staying Open

Monticello, NY – Due to ongoing heat and water issues in housing in the Monticello area, the Sullivan County warming center at the Ted Stroebele Recreation Center at 5 Jefferson Street will remain open for the time being, said County Manager Josh Potosek.

The Liberty warming center, located at the United Methodist Church at 170 North Main Street, has now closed, due to the easing of the brutally cold temperatures which blanketed the County this past week.

Help Is Available for Owners of Older Buildings

Liberty, NY – Commercial property owners, real estate agents, contractors, and community leaders are invited to attend a meeting to find out how to save money while making repairs to older buildings.
The Preservation League of New York State and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation will present a free workshop in Sullivan County to help people take advantage of New York’s Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credits.

Warming Centers Reactivated

Monticello, NY – In anticipation of a return to severe cold temperatures, County Manager Josh Potosek announced today that both the Monticello and Liberty warming centers will be operational later this weekend.

“While warmer temperatures are a relief, they’ll prove to be short-lived,” Potosek noted. “Sullivan County will soon be back to subzero weather and brutally cold wind chills.”

County Issues Health Advisory on Influenza

Monticello, NY – Sullivan County Public Health Services would like to notify the public of the importance of influenza vaccination and prevention measures that can be taken if you or someone you come into close contact with has the flu.

This past week, the NYS Department of Health Commissioner urged all New Yorkers six months of age and over who have not yet received a flu shot to get vaccinated as soon as possible. Over the past week, cases of influenza rose by 37%, and new cases of influenza continue to be reported in almost all NYS counties.

Local Students Creating Valentines to Thank Veterans

Monticello, NY – The Sullivan County Veterans Service Agency proudly presents a “Valentines for Vets” exhibit in the lobby of the County Government Center, 100 North Street, Monticello. 

Every year, local students create special Valentine’s Day cards to brighten the lives of veterans. 
Last year thanks to the efforts of teachers and students, more than 2,000 valentines were delivered to hospitalized veterans at the VA Medical Centers in Castle Point and Albany.

With Flu-Related Hospitalizations Up, Sullivan County Offers Vaccinations

Monticello, NY – Sullivan County Public Health officials and staff participated on a statewide conference call today to get an update from the NYS Department of Health Commissioner about the increase in the number of influenza cases and hospitalizations across New York. Sullivan County Public Health Services has implemented local flu surveillance reporting protocols in collaboration with area healthcare providers to help monitor flu prevalence in the County.

County Launches 2018 Plans & Progress Grant Program

Monticello, NY – Applications are now being accepted for funding of community improvement projects through the Sullivan County Plans & Progress Small Grant Program.

The purpose of the program is to assist local municipalities, community groups, and not-for-profit organizations throughout Sullivan County with projects related to tourism, community and economic development, image enhancement, trails development, health improvement, agricultural and farmland protection, and other County goals.
